A Russian Su-34 jet launched the munitions over the city of Belgorod, 40 kilometers north of the border with Ukraine, according to reports by state news agencies RIA Novosti and TASS.
“Around 22:15 Moscow time on April 20, when a Su-34 aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces was flying over the city of Belgorod, an emergency launch of aerial ammunition took place,” TASS said, citing Russian Ministry of Defense.
Following the explosion, a car landed on the roof of a shop, according to RIA Novosti. The mayor of Belgorod, Valentin Demidov, wrote on his Telegram channel that several apartment buildings were damaged in the explosion, reports CNN.
Russian state media boasted of the country’s Su-34 warplanes last December, when it said a “new batch of … front-line bombers” had been delivered to Russian forces for use against Ukraine. It did not provide a specific number of aircraft delivered.
“The Su-34 bomber will form the core strike power of Russia’s front-line aircraft. The modernized Su-34 fighter jet has expanded combat capabilities that allow it to use advanced air-launched munitions, increase the range for striking land and naval targets and expand the conditions and accuracy,” a TASS report at the time said.
Aircraft can carry a variety of munitions, including air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, as well as guided and unguided bombs.
Russian state media did not specify what kind of ammunition fell on Belgorod.
