The meeting of the Contact Group for the defense of Ukraine, held at the US military base Ramstein in Germany, focused on anti-aircraft systems and ammunition supply, without any major announcement of new equipment. Ukraine has received assurances regarding the maintenance of military assistance, reports Reuters.
Lloyd Austin, the US Secretary of Defense, said the first Abrams tanks would be transferred from the US to Germany in the coming weeks. Another American official stated that hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers will be trained on the territory of Germany. The United States will provide Ukraine with 31 Abrams M1A2 tanks.
“To date, in just a few months, the Contact Group has delivered over 230 tanks, over 1,550 armored vehicles and other equipment and ammunition to support nine armored brigades,” said Lloyd Austin.
The German Minister of Defense, Boris Pistorius, announced on Friday an agreement with Poland for the establishment of a maintenance center for Leopard tanks on Polish territory. All the participants decided to bear the costs of this center, estimated at 150-200 million euros.
“We reviewed the various capabilities and systems that the Ukrainians need to advance quickly on the battlefield,” said the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, quoted by Le Monde newspaper.
