Sheffield defended admirably in the first half but were beaten by a Mahrez penalty shortly before half-time, after which the Algerian scored two more goals in a much-improved City performance.
The first chance belonged to those from Sheffield, after 90 seconds, with City endangering the opponents’ goal late on with a shot sent by Erling Haaland, in the 15th minute.
Five minutes before the end of the first half, City won a penalty after Daniel Jebbison tripped Bernardo Silva in the box. Mahrez made no mistake from 11 meters and gave the citizens the advantage.
City dominated the second half and Mahrez calmed things down after picking up the ball in the middle of the pitch and driving it into the box to beat Foderingham to make it 2-0 in the 60th minute.
Five minutes later, the same Mahrez scored the hat-trick. Jack Grealish found the Algerian on the edge of the box, his shot from the first went perfectly into the short corner, for 3-0.
Manchester City awaits in the final the winner of the other semi-final, between Man United and Brighton, which will be played on Sunday.
