“The official visit to the Republic of Chile, the second leg of the South American tour, the first visit of this level in the last 10 years, already benefits from a dynamic framework of political-diplomatic dialogue in recent years. Built on favorable bilateral premises, the objective of the visit is to boost political collaboration, economic exchanges, strengthen sectoral cooperation between the two countries and encourage people-to-people contacts”, announced the Presidency.
On the agenda of the official discussions between President Klaus Iohannis and President Gabriel Boric are the status and perspectives of the intensification of bilateral cooperation, possibilities to stimulate sectoral projects, with an emphasis on the development of trade exchanges and the mutual attraction of investments, in the IT, energy, environment and agriculture sectors . Emergency situations and the response to disasters generated by climate change will also be on the agenda, with a Memorandum of Understanding to be signed between the responsible institutions of the two countries.
In terms of education, Romania will soon open the first Romanian language lectureship in Latin America, at the Universidad de Chile, with the support of the Romanian Language Institute. This action creates the prerequisites for increasing interpersonal contacts and common cultural projects.
The official program will also include visiting, together with the Chilean counterpart, the Museum of Memory and Human Rights in Santiago de Chile, a project of special symbolism for the host state. The President of Romania will donate to the museum a set of archival diplomatic documents regarding the rescue of a large number of Jews by the Chilean consul Samuel de Campo, active in Bucharest during the Second World War. Also, copies of the documents related to the Chilean refugees evacuated by the Romanian authorities and received in Romania, after the 1973 coup d’état, which was followed by a bloody stage in the history of Chile, will be donated.
President Klaus Iohannis is visiting Latin America from April 18-26.
