Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo surrendered to US authorities on Friday, an official with the US Federal Sheriff’s Service told Reuters, a day after his attempt to block his extradition to Peru on corruption charges was rejected.
Toledo, who was president from 2001 to 2006, is wanted in Peru on allegations that he received more than $25 million from Brazilian construction company Odebrecht in exchange for help in securing public works contracts. Prosecutors are asking for a 20-year prison sentence, according to Reuters.
Toledo denied soliciting or accepting bribes. He has not been criminally charged in the United States.
The former president will be moved to Lima, the capital of Peru, in two to three days, said Silvana Carrion, the local prosecutor in charge of the case, to the local television station Canal N.
A federal judge in Washington on Thursday rejected Toledo’s request to block the extradition.
The former president was arrested in the United States in July 2019, following an official extradition request from Peru. He was released on bail in 2020 and lived in California until at least last year.
