“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs specifies that, in the context of the developments related to the security situation in Sudan, the inter-institutional task force for the management of the situation, activated by the order of the Minister of Foreign Affairs Bogdan Aurescu starting on April 16, 2023, continued its activity for supporting and providing assistance to Romanian citizens on the territory of Sudan, with a view to the safe evacuation of those who requested it. Since the activation of the inter-institutional task force, numerous steps have been taken, through the involved Romanian diplomatic missions and institutional partners, to identify and contact Romanian citizens and their family members in Sudan, as well as to establish optimal methods of evacuation. The MFA specifies that the activity of the Romanian Embassy in Khartoum was suspended in 2021, and consular assistance and protection services for Romanian citizens in Sudan are provided by the Romanian Embassy in Addis Ababa (Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia)”, according to a press release. .
At the same time, the MAE specifies that, until now, at the level of the Romanian Embassy in Addis Ababa, they had registered their presence and/or were contacted by the Romanian diplomatic mission with a view to evacuating 22 Romanian citizens and 4 family members, Sudanese citizens.
“Also, considering the deterioration of the security situation, as of April 17, 2023, the travel alert for Sudan was raised to level 8 out of 9. The inter-institutional task force continues its activity 24 hours a day, monitors developments in area and maintains contact with Romanian citizens from Sudan and with the other EU member states, in order to evacuate Romanian citizens and their family members who have expressed their desire to be repatriated. The MFA strongly recommends all Romanian citizens who are on the territory of Sudan to urgently contact the Embassy of Romania in Addis Ababa and communicate their coordinates, so that they can be contacted in case of need”, the release states.
