“This tragic violence in Sudan has already cost the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians,” Biden said in a statement quoted by Reuters. “It is unthinkable and it must stop.”
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that “all US personnel and dependents” had been safely evacuated and that the US would continue to help Americans in Sudan plan for their own safety.
All US government personnel and a small number of diplomatic personnel from other countries were evacuated in the operation, which took fewer than 100 people out of the country, US officials said.
Just over 100 members of US special operations forces were involved in the evacuation, getting in and out of Sudan without being fired upon by warring factions on the ground, US military officials said.
Other foreign nationals began to be evacuated from a Sudanese Red Sea port on Saturday. Japanese news station TBS reported that United Nations staff members, including Japanese nationals and their families, will be evacuated from Sudan as early as Sunday.
The bloody onslaught of urban warfare has stranded large numbers of people in the Sudanese capital, disabling the airport and making some roads impassable.
The UN and foreign states have called on the rival military leaders to honor the declared ceasefire, which has been largely ignored, and to open safe passage for fleeing civilians and the delivery of much-needed aid.
Sudan’s sudden descent into war has thwarted plans to restore civilian rule, brought an already impoverished country to the brink of a humanitarian disaster and threatened a wider conflict that could draw in outside powers, four years after the ouster of autocrat Omar al -Bashir, in power for a long time, following a popular uprising.
With the airport closed and skies uncertain, thousands of foreigners – including embassy staff, aid workers and students from Khartoum and other parts of Africa’s third-largest country – were also unable to leave the country.
Saudi Arabia evacuated the Gulf citizens from Port Sudan, located on the Red Sea, 650 km from Khartoum. Jordan will use the same route for its citizens.
