Josep Borrell wrote in an opinion piece published in the Journal Du Dimanche that Taiwan “it concerns us from an economic, commercial and technological point of view“.
“That is why I am calling on the European navy to patrol the Taiwan Strait to show Europe’s commitment to freedom of navigation in this absolutely crucial area“, he wrote, informs The Guardian.
In a speech opening a debate on China in the European Parliament on Tuesday, Borrell said: “Taiwan is crucial for Europe”
“Not only for a moral reason, an action against Taiwan must be rejected. But also because, from an economic point of view, it would be extremely serious for us”, added the head of EU diplomacy, citing Taiwan’s role in the semiconductor industry .
Borrell’s comments come after French President Emmanuel Macron argued this month that Europe should not follow US policy in the event of a conflict with China over Taiwan.
Macron’s comments, after a visit to China, drew criticism from politicians both in the US and within the EU.
