Asked about his position on whether or not Crimea is part of Ukraine, Chinese Ambassador Lu Shaye said in an interview broadcast on French television on Friday that, historically, Crimea was part of Russia and was offered Ukraine by former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev.
„These former USSR countries have no real status in international law, as there is no international agreement to materialize their sovereign statusShaye said.
France reacted on Sunday by declaring its “full solidarity” with all affected allied countries, which it said had gained independence “after decades of oppression”, writes Reuters.
“Regarding Ukraine specifically, it was internationally recognized within its borders, including Crimea, in 1991 by the entire international community, including China,” a Foreign Ministry spokesman said.
The spokesman added that China will have to clarify whether or not these comments reflect its position.
The three Baltic states, which were part of the Soviet Union in the past, reacted in the same way as France.
China’s Foreign Ministry did not respond to a Reuters request for comment on the ambassador’s statements.
