The aurora borealis was spotted in several parts of the UK overnight, with hundreds of onlookers posting stunning photos of the aurora borealis on social media.
The famous aurora borealis dazzled the UK night sky on Sunday night into the early hours of Monday morning.
Auroras have been reported from the top of Scotland to Wales and even Cornwall.
AuroraWatch at Lancaster University issued a rare red alert for the northern lights at around 00.50 on Monday morning.
The best chances of seeing the Northern Lights are towards the top of Scotland, as close as possible to the Arctic Circle.
However, the whole of Britain had at least a 10% chance of seeing the aurora last night, according to Ventusky weather maps.
Residents of the Shetland Islands had the best chance of seeing the light show, with a 60 per cent chance of an aurora around 10.30pm.
The Northern Lights are caused by solar activity, according to the Met Office.
She said: “The northern lights appear as a consequence of solar activity and are the result of collisions of charged particles in the solar wind colliding with molecules in the Earth’s upper atmosphere.”
“The best conditions to see the lights are when the sky is dark and cloudless. The cloud cover eventually blocks the view of the light.”
“Ideally, the lights will be best seen away from any light pollution in remote areas facing the northern horizon – north-facing coasts produce some of the best viewing spots.”
“The northern lights are most active during the equinox and solstice, in March-April and September-October.”
