The authors of the document warn that the country can no longer be protected by its geographical isolation in the “missile age”. The government will spend about 19 billion Australian dollars (12 billion US dollars) to implement the recommendations in the document.
The 110-page review is described as the biggest review of Australian defense since the Second World War.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the long-awaited “strategic defense review” (DSR) was “the most important piece of work that has been done since the Second World War… [într-o] world in which the challenges to our national security are constantly evolving”.
The review comes amid heightened military tension in the region over China’s stance on Taiwan, which it has repeatedly vowed to conquer by force if necessary. Also, the Chinese navy has a major presence in the South China Sea, claiming parts of it as its territory, contrary to international law.
Australia’s armed forces will move from land-based armor to a “longer-range strike capability with Australian-made munitions,” Defense Minister Richard Marles said.
The minister also said that the acquisition of “precision missiles” with a range of over 500 km would give the army “the firepower and mobility it needs in the future”.
The strategy also states that Australia’s northern defenses should be strengthened and the Australian Defense Force (ADF) should have a greater ability to operate from northern bases.
Australia will also accelerate plans to acquire the High Mobility Land-Based Artillery Missile System (HIMARS.
In order to finance the new weapons, several projects will be postponed.
