“China respects the status of sovereign nations in the case of the republics that emerged after the collapse of the USSR,” Mao Ning, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said on Monday, quoted by Le Monde daily.
“China respects the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of all countries and upholds the goals and principles of the United Nations Charter,” Mao Ning emphasized.
Lu Shaye, China’s ambassador to France, generated controversy after asserting that the nations that emerged after the collapse of the Soviet Union have no concrete status in international law.
“The countries of the former Soviet Union do not have an effective status in international law, because there is no international agreement that concretizes their status as sovereign states,” said Lu Shaye in an interview granted to TF1 and LCI television stations.
When asked about Crimea, a Ukrainian region annexed by Russia, Lu Shaye stated: “It depends on how we perceive the problem. Crimea originally belonged to Russia. Khrushchev offered Crimea to Ukraine during the Soviet Union. There should not be harassment on such issues. It is important to reach a truce” in Ukraine.
Despite the clarifications provided by Beijing, the Chinese ambassador, Lu Shaye, was summoned to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday, according to the daily newspaper Le Figaro. Previously, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia had announced their intentions to summon the ambassadors of China, to offer explanations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova declared itself surprised by the statements of the Chinese ambassador from Paris.
“We are surprised to hear these statements by the Chinese ambassador in France who questioned the sovereignty of the countries that declared their independence in 1991. During the last three decades since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the Republic of Moldova and the People’s Republic of China have built bilateral relations on the basis of mutual respect and support for sovereignty and territorial integrity. The remarks of the Chinese ambassador in France are absolutely unacceptable. We are waiting for the clarification of the official position from the Chinese authorities,” said Igor Zaharov, the communication adviser of the Moldovan Foreign Minister, quoted by Jurnal de Chisinau publication.
