Activists of the environmental group Ultima Generatie (LG) blocked traffic in at least 36 places during the protests held on Monday in the area of the German capital. Columns were formed for tens of kilometers on the highways around Berlin, and at least 15 ambulances could not move to the interventions because of the environmentalists’ protests.
The German authorities detained 200 environmental activists, and 40 will be presented in court with proposals for preventive arrest, according to RBB24.
According to the publication Tagesspiegel and the DPA agency, several cases were reported in which the drivers of cars stuck for hours assaulted environmental activists in an attempt to free the roadways. The police urged the blocked drivers not to act alone to unblock the roads, according to the NTV station.
The environmentalist group Ultima Generaţie (LG), considered radical, frequently resorts to blocking roads during protest actions against what it considers to be insufficient actions to protect the climate. Another environmental organization, Fridays for Future, has recently distanced itself from the extreme actions of colleagues from Ultima Generazione.
Many German citizens are unhappy with the extreme protests of environmental groups and plans such as shutting down nuclear power plants, banning gas-fired power plants and internal combustion cars. Germany temporarily blocked the European Union’s plan to ban the production of internal combustion vehicles from 2035 and obtained the continuation of the manufacture of engines of this type by using synthetic ecological fuels.
