The Council of the European Union announced, on Monday, sanctions against eight people and an entity responsible for “serious violations” of human rights in Iran, against the background of accusations related to actions to repress dissidents.

The Council of the EU has sanctioned the telecommunications company Ariantel, accused of having contributed to the creation by the Iranian Administration of the “communications surveillance architecture”, in order to suppress dissidents and critical voices.
Among the sanctioned persons are Iranian parliamentarians and members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
“The restrictive measures currently target 211 individuals and 35 entities. They consist of freezing assets, imposing travel bans in the European Union and stopping financing and the provision of economic resources,” the EU Council announces, according to a statement posted on the website own and viewed by the MEDIAFAX agency.
“The European Union and Member States urge the Iranian authorities to end all forms of violence against peaceful protests, to end the use of arbitrary detention as a means of silencing critical voices and to release those wrongfully detained. The European Union calls on Iran to stop the practice of imposing or the application of death sentences against protesters, to annul the death sentences pronounced and to offer fair procedures to all detainees,” the EU Council underlines.
