Romanian diplomats will be obliged to speak two foreign languages, according to a legislative initiative of the USR adopted by the Senate.

The members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps of Romania are required to know at least two foreign languages, one of which must be English or French, the draft says. The legislative initiative belongs to USR senator Cristian Bordei and received the favorable vote of the Senate.
“We have taken another important step in the process of updating the legislation in this field. It is essential that members of the diplomatic and consular corps have fluent communication skills in several foreign languages, at least one of which is part of the main working languages used in international forums and spoken in most business and cultural spheres in world. Diplomatic activity is not done with any foreign language, and multilingualism is a policy assumed at the level of the European Union institutions”, said Bordei, who is also the secretary of the committee for foreign policy in the Senate.
93 senators voted for the project and only one senator abstained.
