“Russia’s willingness to continue to maintain the unilateral moratorium on the repositioning of medium- and short-range land-based missile systems in certain regions will fundamentally depend on the specific technical data and ranges of American missiles,” said Vladimir Iermakov, the director of the Nuclear Nonproliferation Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Moscow, quoted by the Tass agency and the CNN television channel.
“But even at this moment we can confidently say that the destabilizing military programs of the United States and its allies make our moratorium increasingly fragile, both in the Asia-Pacific area and in Europe,” the Russian official emphasized.
The United States withdrew in 2019 from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, signed with Russia in 1987. But Russia has maintained that it is unilaterally applying a moratorium on the repositioning of ballistic systems of this type. But NATO’s general secretary has in the past categorized Russia’s moratorium as “lacking credibility”, accusing Moscow of repositioning such types of ballistic systems.
Vladimir Iermakov announced, according to the Reuters agency, that Russia and China will analyze the potential involvement of Western allies in the expansion of the US anti-ballistic system, which “clearly undermines strategic stability”.
Moreover, the Russian official warned of the risks of a direct military confrontation between Russia and the United States. “If the United States continues on its current course of confrontation with Russia, by steadily escalating the stakes toward a slide toward direct armed conflict, then the fate of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) may be a foregone conclusion. face, the most acute threat is associated with the risk of nuclear escalation, as a result of a direct military confrontation between the great powers. And these risks, with the deepest regret, are constantly increasing,” drew Vladimir Iermakov’s attention.
