“We have made very good progress, we are on the right path, but we have to tell you that there is still a long way to go,” says the Austrian Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, after Lucian Bode said that Romania’s Schengen accession process must to be completed in 2023.
“I have great understanding for the minister’s grievance and for the expectations of the Romanian people regarding the next stage of accession to the Schengen area, but at the moment including Austrian citizens have the same dilemma when they are subject to checks with Germany. We have made very good progress, we are on the right path, but we have to tell you that there is still a long way to go”, says the Austrian Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, in a joint press statement supported by Lucian Bode.
Bode said that the process of Romania’s accession to the Schengen area must be completed in 2023.
“I conveyed to the minister that the process of accession to the Schengen area must be completed in 2023. Through the way in which the European idea of an area without internal border controls was born, accession to the Schengen area is not only a desire of Romania, but it is a right established by treaties for all member states. We are determined to cooperate closely at the level of our institutions because we are very determined to reach a solution during this year”, Bode said at the end of the meeting with the Austrian Minister of the Interior.
Austria was the only country that opposed Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area at the JHA Council on December 8, 2022.
