“We have taken the first steps, but we still have a lot of work to do together,” says the Austrian Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, when asked if in 2023 Austria will still oppose Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area.

“I repeat why I could not vote on December 8 for Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area. First of all, because we have a system that does not work. if there are controls that you carry out at the external borders of Romania, there are also controls between Germany and Austria. This means that Austrian citizens are also controlled. France is doing the same with Germany… Our bilateral interest is for this system to start working with functional external borders. That is why we are close partners working together for these goals. we succeeded in the first steps, but we still have a lot of work to do together”, says Gerhard Karner.
He states that the European Union must be protected at its external borders.
“I say very openly, I can’t offer a date today. First of all, I want to achieve results together so that UJE is protected at the external borders. (…) We are far from that moment when we can claim that the system is functional”, adds Karner.

On December 8, 2022, Austria was the only country that opposed Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area.
