Biden will stop in the capital Port Moresby for three hours on his way to Australia to attend the Quad leaders’ summit, a spokesman for the Papua New Guinea prime minister’s office told Reuters.
A source told Reuters that Biden would also meet with several Pacific Island leaders during his visit in May.
The meeting would be a significant move in US efforts to counter China’s growing influence in the strategically important region and comes after Biden hosted Pacific island leaders at the White House in September.
The Quad Summit will be held in Sydney on May 24, attended by the leaders of India, Australia, Japan and the United States, the Australian government announced.
Last year, the United States stepped up diplomacy and aid to the Pacific region after China struck a security deal with the Solomon Islands, and Beijing tried but failed to strike a broader security and trade pact with 10 nations. insular.
