The mechanics of the Paris metro stopped work on Friday to show their solidarity with a colleague who is facing legal proceedings. He is being investigated because a female passenger died in an accident, according to the BBC.
The 40-year-old woman died last Saturday in a subway station. She got out of the carriage belatedly, and the door closed, catching her coat. The woman was dragged along the platform by the train that left the station.
Colleagues of the mechanic involved in the fatal accident were furious because the man was detained in the night from Thursday to Friday.
“The police came in force to raise him in front of his traumatized wife and children. They treat him like a criminal,” said Jean-Christophe Delprat, from the Force Ouvrière (FO) union.
The mechanic has 15 years of experience and a clean record. He was tested for alcohol and drug use, but the result was negative. If found guilty, the man could be sentenced to five years in prison.
On Friday morning, the mechanics on the line where the accident occurred stopped working as a sign of solidarity with their colleague, who in the meantime was released from custody. The protest lasted until Friday afternoon.
About 60 deaths are recorded annually in the Paris metro, most of them suicides.
