According to the quoted European diplomats, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia can suspend direct imports of Ukrainian grain, but must allow their transit to other countries in the European Union or to third countries.
Poland welcomed the agreement. “We have just finalized agreements with the European Union regarding the banning of imports of these agricultural products, which primarily led to the destabilization of the Polish market,” said Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
The European Commission has reached an agreement in principle with Central and Eastern European states, including Romania, to protect the interests of farmers, but also for the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products, said Valdis Dombrovskis, executive vice-president of the European institution. “The European Commission has reached an agreement in principle with Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia regarding agricultural products. We have acted to address the requests expressed both by farmers from EU countries and by Ukraine”, he declared on Friday evening, through Twitter, Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of Economic Affairs.
“The main elements of the agreement, also agreed with Ukraine, are: the withdrawal of unilateral measures applied by Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria and Hungary. There will be exceptional protection measures for four products: wheat, corn, rape and sunflower seeds. There will be a support package worth 100 million euros for affected farmers from five EU member states”, stated Valdis Dombrovskis, emphasizing that checks will also be carried out to protect other agricultural products, including sunflower oil, and there will be activities for ensuring Ukrainian grain exports to other countries on the “color of solidarity”.
“I welcome the agreement in principle on the transit of four types of Ukrainian grains and seeds. It is an agreement that guarantees both Ukraine’s ability to export, to continue providing food to the world, and the existence of our farmers,” Ursula von der reacted Leyen, President of the European Commission.
