The world’s carbonated drinks trade is at risk due to the conflict in Sudan, manufacturers warn. That’s because the fighting has affected supplies of gum arabic, a key ingredient in the drinks. Sudan is the world’s largest producer of gum arabic.

Carbonated drinks trade around the world at risk due to conflict in Sudan
Arabic gum is an ingredient used in the manufacture of carbonated drinks, sweets and cosmetics. It is also an ingredient used in the pharmaceutical industry.
The African country is the world’s largest producer of gum arabic, a resin extracted from the acacia tree, and since the outbreak of the conflict, international producers have had supply problems.
About 70% of the gum arabic needed in the world comes from acacia trees in the Sahel region, located in Sudan, according to Sky News.
12 exporters, suppliers and distributors contacted by Reuters said transactions had stopped.
It is currently “impossible” to source gum arabic from rural Sudan because of unrest and roadblocks, said Mohamad Alnoor, who runs Gum Arabic USA.
However, some of the major companies that use gum arabic have managed to build up stocks and estimate that they will run out in six months at the most.
