The President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, sent a message on Saturday on the occasion of War Veterans Day. The message was presented by Mihai Şomordolea, State Counselor at the Department of National Security.
“Today, we celebrate the war veterans, heroes of the Romanian nation who fought and sacrificed themselves in the two world conflagrations for national ideals. Love of country, belonging to the nation and courage guided the deeds of arms of the war veterans on the battlefield. And thanks to them, Romania is today a sovereign and independent, unitary and indivisible state. The loyalty, determination and ultimate sacrifice from Mărăşti, Mărăşeşti and Oituz, Oarba de Mureş and Carei endure over decades in the memory of the Romanian people and continue to inspire young generations through the power of the example they represent”, President Iohannis said.
The head of state mentioned the war in Ukraine and NATO in his message to Romanian veterans.
“The brutal military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine reminds us all of the horrors of war and makes us appreciate, all the more, the sacrifice and dedication of our veterans for the defense of the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Romania. Romania is today a robust and respected member state of NATO and the European Union and a reliable strategic partner of the United States of America. We deal with the current security challenges with maximum responsibility and we are an important actor in the international gear of their management. We consistently fulfill our commitments in the European and Euro-Atlantic context, we act as a solid pillar of stability in the Black Sea region and we actively participate in strengthening security on NATO’s Eastern Flank. Our country currently benefits from the most solid security guarantees in history. The unity and solidarity that define us within NATO increase the strength of our collective defense, and the substantial presence of the allies on the national territory is a concrete proof of this,” said Klaus Iohannis.
At the end of the message, the President of Romania spoke about the gratitude and appreciation owed to war veterans.
