The President of the Philippines, Ferdinand Marcos, will be received at the White House on Monday, for discussions about Washington-Manila bilateral relations and the regional situation.
President Biden will reaffirm “the firm commitment of the United States to the defense of the Philippines,” the Washington Presidency announced on Sunday, according to The Hill publication.
“The discussions will refer to regional issues and the coordination of efforts to uphold international law and to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific area,” the White House emphasized.
The meeting between Presidents Joseph Biden and Ferdinand Marcos takes place in the context in which the United States and the Philippines recently carried out the most extensive joint military maneuvers, in Philippine territorial waters, near the South China Sea. On Monday, the first US-Philippine air exercises held in the Philippines since the 1990s will take place.
The United States has intensified relations with the Philippine state and increased its military presence in the region amid tensions with Beijing over Taiwan.
The State Department in Washington announced that the United States stands with the Philippines in the context of China’s ongoing actions of “violation of freedom of navigation in the South China Sea”. Washington has denounced Chinese actions of “intimidation” of Philippine ships carrying out patrol missions in its own exclusive economic zone.
President Ferdinand Marcos announced before the meeting with Biden, according to The Associated Press agency, his “determination” to strengthen relations with the United States to address common “concerns” and to advance “central bilateral interests”.
