According to Reuters, Pope Francis met with around 600 refugees, the poor and the homeless during a visit to the Church of Saint Elizabeth in Budapest, on the second day of his visit to Hungary.
He followed a band of Hungarian Roma singers. The Sovereign Pontiff also listened to the stories of some families who had to flee the path of war.
Oleg Yakovlev said that he, his wife Lyudmila and their five children had to leave Dnipro a year ago, after the Russian bombings.
“We were well received here and found a new home, but many suffered and are still suffering because of the war,” Yakovlev told the pope.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, millions of refugees have fled across Central Europe, including Hungary, and moved to other countries. Approximately 35,000 applied for temporary protection status in Hungary.
Pope Francis said that expressing compassion for those who suffer from poverty and tragedy is an integral part of being a Christian, even if those in need are non-believers.
“Even in the midst of pain and suffering, once we have received the balm of love, we find the courage to keep moving forward: we find the strength to believe that all is not lost and that a different future is possible,” he said.
