“According to the British Ministry of Defence, Russian commanders would have begun to ‘punish infractions of discipline’ by detaining soldiers in what they call ‘Dungeons’, pits in the ground covered with metal mesh,” writes The Guardian.
“Several recent reports from Russian personnel give similar accounts of being placed in Jails for misconduct, including drunkenness and attempting to terminate their contracts,” the Ministry of Defense said in a statement posted on Twitter.
It notes that in the early months of the war many Russian commanders took a “relatively lax approach” to enforcing discipline, but that since the fall of 2022 there have been reports of multiple increasingly draconian initiatives to improve discipline in among the soldiers.
This is said to have happened especially after Russia appointed Valeri Gerasimov as the overall commander for the war in Ukraine starting in January of this year.
