At least 10 people died in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil, the Ecuadorian prosecutor’s office and the police announced Sunday night. Three other people were injured, including a 5-year-old girl, police added, according to Reuters.
A rifle and handguns were found at the scene, the Ecuadorian Prosecutor’s Office announced on Twitter.
“We believe this is related to a fight between organized criminal groups for territorial control,” said the commander of the National Police, William Villaroel.
No arrests have been made, but investigators have several leads.
The Ecuadorian government declared a state of emergency in early April in Guayaquil and surrounding areas in an attempt to limit the rise in violence in the Pacific port city. The measure includes a state of siege that comes into effect every day from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m.
The South American country recently authorized civilians to carry and use firearms for personal defense amid a rise in crime that the government has blamed on drug traffickers.
