More than 780,000 people participated in the demonstrations organized in dozens of cities in France on May 1, according to the estimates of the Ministry of the Interior, while the unions reported 2.3 million participants, informs the daily newspaper Le Parisien.
In Paris, there were approximately 112,000 demonstrators, according to the authorities, and union centers estimated 550,000 participants.
The May 1 rallies degenerated into violence in Paris, Lyon, Nantes and Rennes, against the backdrop of general dissatisfaction with the pension reform. At least 108 law enforcement officers were injured in confrontations with the demonstrators, stated the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, quoted by the daily newspaper Le Monde. 291 protesters involved in violence were detained.
The police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters. At least 200 demonstrators were injured, 30 suffering severe injuries, the organization Observatorul Medicilor de Strada announced.
