Jared Wise, 51, who was an FBI agent and surveillance agent from 2004 to 2017, was taken into custody on Monday and released under certain conditions, according to court documents. Until last June, he lived in New Braunfels, Texas, but has since moved to Bend, Oregon.
Wise was captured on closed-circuit television entering the door of the US Senate wing and raising his arms “in triumph,” according to an affidavit filed in federal court.
In footage captured by D.C. Metropolitan Police officers’ body-worn cameras, Wise addressed them directly, saying, “You’re disgusting. I’m a former – I’m a former policeman. You are disgusting. You are the Nazis. You are the Gestapo. You can’t see that. … Shame on you! Shame on you! Shame on you!”.
Camera footage also captured Wise’s reaction as other nearby protesters began attacking police who were trying to defend the Capitol, the filing said. In the recording, he can be heard encouraging them by shouting: “Kill them! Kill them! Kill them!”.
A lawyer for Wise could not be reached by Reuters for comment. An FBI spokesman also did not respond to a request for comment on Wise’s arrest and previous employment with the bureau.
More than 1,000 people have been indicted so far for their roles in the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021, in a failed attempt to keep then-Republican President Donald Trump in power by blocking Congress from certifying victory in the 2020 election of Democrat Joe Biden.
Five people died during and shortly after the riot, and approximately 140 police officers were injured.
