Metropolitan Antonie participated in the Pope’s weekly audience in St. Peter’s Square. At the end of the audience, the Russian metropolitan greeted Francis and presented him with an icon.
Later, Antonie was seen being led off the stage by one of the Vatican employees.
During the audience, the Pope spoke about his visit to Hungary, where he made repeated calls for an end to the war.
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, firmly supported the invasion of Ukraine justifying it on religious grounds. The Pope expressed his intention to speak with Patriarch Kirill about this subject.
