“I want you to present me, together with the Competition Council, the measures that we discussed with the farmers on what the milk industry means. There were discussions that were agreed with the processors and the retailers, we are talking to all the players in this chain and I know, until this moment, that these decisions were accepted by the majority of the processors and they contributed together with the trading chains to the decrease in the price milk on the shelf. At that meeting we discussed that a working group of farmers-processors will be coordinated from the Ministry of Agriculture, in order to take the appropriate measures for mid- and long-term decisions, so that we no longer encounter such problems”, said Nicolae Ciucă at the beginning of the government meeting.
The Minister of Agriculture, Petre Daea, stated that on May 1 he personally went to see if the price of milk was reduced.
“According to what was established together, on May 1st I personally went to see what the situation is in the stores, on the shelf, to see if this measure that had to be implemented was operationalized. Talking with Mr. President of the Competition Council, I received the information from you that 70% of the operators on the market would be in a position to respond to that agreement. (…) Every morning, as you ordered, at 7.30, I have a conference with the country and at the county structures they present me the receipt certifying the respective value and whether the reduction has been carried out”, replied Daea.
The President of the Competition Council, Bogdan Chiriţoiu, stated that all the big store chains participate in this program.
“The majority of processors declared their intention to participate in the program. The application differs from store to store, because there are hundreds of stores and several dozen products, overall there are thousands of products for which these discounts must be applied, so obviously the application is not complete at the moment. We expect it to take a few more days until we see it generalized in all stores, chains and the entire range of manufacturers. We have the price monitor, we have the image of all the prices of all the foods in the big store chains, we have this database and we will compare the prices from April 11, the date on which this agreement was reached, and the prices they practice in to the extent that we see that it does not apply, we ask for clarification. It is possible that sometimes there is no Romanian milk and then it is not included in this discount program and we do not see it in the Monitor, we only see the price. It is possible that it was already in the promotion, on April 11, and then the discount did not appear. Where we see discrepancies, we will ask for clarification”, added Chiriţoiu.
“All these issues must be clarified and all that must result in the end is the commitment we all had, the state institutions, producers, processors, commercial chains”, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă concluded.
According to an agreement, from May 1, the price of milk on the shelf would be reduced by 20%. The discount applies to milk of Romanian origin, without being included in any promotion, and will be divided between retailers (minimum 10%) and processors (minimum 10%).
