Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani canceled an official visit to Paris at the last minute on Thursday following comments made by French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin about Rome’s migration policy.
“The offenses brought to the government and Italy by Minister Darmanin are unacceptable. This is not the spirit in which common European challenges should be approached“, Tajani wrote in a tweet, specifying that he will not attend a working dinner with his French counterpart Catherine Colonna in Paris, scheduled for Thursday evening, POLITICO reports.
Earlier, Darmanin told radio station RMC that the Italian government of “extreme right” led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is “unable to solve the problems related to migration“.
Before Tajani canceled his trip, the French Foreign Ministry tried to avoid a new diplomatic crisis with a statement, stressing that Paris wants to work with Rome “in a spirit of solidarity” regarding the management of migration flows in Mediterranean.
Traditional Franco-Italian tensions over migration appeared to have eased earlier this year, when Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi visited Darmanin in Paris in February, and the two governments announced joint missions to African countries north.
