“Today, Ambassador Tracy visited Paul Whelan in IK17 Penitentiary in Mordovia. Paul has been illegally detained in Russia for over four years, and his release remains an absolute priority. The US administration will continue to engage with Russian authorities on his case so that Paul to be able to return home as soon as possible,” the American Embassy in Moscow said.
Paul Whelan, a former member of the US Marine Corps, holds American, Irish, British and Canadian nationalities. He was arrested in Russia in 2018 and later sentenced to 16 years in prison for espionage. Both he and Washington deny the allegations.
