The group of experts will decide on Thursday whether the virus can still be considered an emergency in accordance with the rules of the World Health Organization, according to Reuters.
The WHO first granted the highest level of alert to COVID on January 30, 2020, and subsequently the procedure was repeated every three months. Several countries are opposed to extending this status, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said he hopes to end the international emergency this year.
The experts in the sanitary field did not reach a consensus.
“The emergency may be over, but it is essential to communicate that the virus remains a complex public health challenge,” said Professor Marion Koopmans, a Dutch virologist who is part of the WHO group.
The cancellation of the global emergency status will have an impact on global financing.
