“I will be your best friend if we continue what started in Neamţ, what our former colleague Ionel Arsene started. I have never commented on any decision of a magistrate, nor will I comment as long as I am in politics and I will be a public figure. Instead, I want to thank Ionel Arsene for what he did for the people of Neamţ and for Neamţ County”, says Marcel Ciolacu, present at the PSD Neamţ County Election Conference.
The Minister of Justice, Cătălin Predoiu, met on Friday with HE Alfredo Maria Durante Mangoni, the Italian ambassador to Romania.
“Without prejudice in any way to the independence of the Judiciary in Romania and Italy, the Minister of Justice emphasized the bilateral and European interest in the rigorous application of the Council’s Framework Decision of June 13, 2002 regarding the European arrest warrant and surrender procedures between member states. In this context, the Minister of Justice welcomed the decision of the Italian Attorney-General to request the re-examination of the extradition case concerning the Romanian citizen Arsene Ionel, who was definitively convicted, and thanked the ambassador for this. The two officials agreed on the usefulness and necessity of continuing the dialogue on the topics under discussion, including at the ministerial level”, according to a press release sent by the Ministry of Justice on Friday.
The former leader of the Neamţ PSD and former president of the Neamţ County Council, Ionel Arsene, was put on the “most wanted” list of the Romanian Police. The politician was convicted at the beginning of March for influence peddling. He is accused of having taken money to intervene in 2013 in the leadership of ANI, to remove a political rival from office.
