Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the far-right American group Proud Boys, and three other members of the radical organization were found guilty on Thursday of involvement in the plot to attack the headquarters of the US Congress in January 2021 in an effort to maintain power of Donald Trump.
A jury in Washington, DC found Enrique Tarrio guilty of conspiracy to incite to disrupt the constitutional order.
In the last three months, dozens of witnesses were heard in the process regarding the violence produced at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Tarrio risks up to 20 years in prison, although he was not in Washington at the time of the violence, as he had been arrested two days before in another case. But prosecutors believe he organized and coordinated the attacks on the Capitol by members of the Proud Boys group.
Three other members of the extremist group – Ethan Nordean, Joseph Biggs and Zachary Rehl – were found guilty.
The Proud Boys group was “aligned behind Donald Trump and was willing to commit violence in his name,” prosecutor Conor Mulroe charged.
A special prosecutor, Jack Smith, is leading a separate investigation into the alleged involvement of former President Donald Trump in the violence of January 6, 2021, to block the validation of Joseph Biden’s victory in the presidential election.
