Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday that he did not expect migrant flows to increase with the lifting of restrictions on the US border next week, stressing that migrants have legal ways to reach the US, according to Reuters.
The border policy known as Title 42, which allows US authorities to quickly deport migrants to Mexico without being able to seek asylum, is set to expire on May 11.
Lopez Obrador said the availability of U.S. permits and visas that migrants can apply for from their countries of origin will prevent an increase in the number of people trying to reach the U.S.-Mexico border.
“We believe that migrant flows will not increase, because another option is opening up, an alternative,” Lopez Obrador said at his daily press conference.
He stated that his government is working to inform migrants about these possibilities to enter the US.
“These paths exist, they don’t have to leave their countries,” he added.
