The European Union approves additional military assistance for Ukraine

“The Council today adopted assistance worth one billion euros, through the European Peace Facility (EPF), which will contribute to strengthening the capabilities and resilience of Ukraine, to defend independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, to protect the civilian population from aggression ongoing Russian military operation”, the EU Council communicated, according to a statement posted on its website and viewed by the MEDIAFAX agency.

The new assistance package will finance the supply to Ukraine of 155 millimeter shells and, if requested, missiles will also be delivered, through joint purchases by EU states from the European defense industry.

“Today’s decision is a new major step to supply additional ammunition to Ukraine. The Ukrainian armed forces need substantial quantities of ammunition for the defense of the Ukrainian people and the country’s territory. They need the weaponry quickly. Together with the previous decision to quickly supply ammunition from existing stocks, we mobilize two billion euros for this purpose, bringing the total military assistance offered by the EU to the level of 5.6 billion euros”, said Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
