Significant avalanche risk means risk of degree 3 on a scale of 1 to 5.
“At above 1800 m, the snow will accelerate its melting process, especially against the backdrop of high daytime temperatures and insolation, and the water resulting from the melting will penetrate the layer, moistening it additionally. The existing layer is made up of several areas with relatively low resistance, made of wet snow and with a large volumetric mass, having interspersed old crusts, and toward the ground are cup-type crystals. There are cornices near the ridges, and larger snow deposits in the sheltered valleys. Positive daytime temperatures, sunshine and temporary rains will continue to moisten and melt the snow on the surface. The water resulting from melting will weigh down the old layer and it will be able to slide easily on sufficiently inclined slopes, over the crusts inside, and in isolated cases the existing cornices may break. Medium-sized and isolated large melt avalanches can thus be spontaneously triggered, the risk being amplified by weak overloads. Some avalanches can also engage older layers and descend to altitudes lower than 1800 m. Below 1800 m, the snow will continue to melt. On the more inclined and shaded slopes from over 1700 m, flows or melting avalanches of small sizes can still be triggered, the risk being amplified with overloads, no matter how small”, announced the meteorologists.
Their warning is in effect until Monday evening.
In the other mountains of the country, the risk of avalanches is moderate, grade 2.
In the mountains of Făgăraș, at Bâlea Lac, a 2.15-meter layer of snow was recorded on Friday.
