Faced with more than 100 wildfires, the Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, qualified the situation as “unprecedented”.
Smith said a warm, dry spring created “so much firewood,” and about 122,000 hectares have burned so far.
Many of the fires are burning out of control, fueled by strong winds.
The worst affected areas include Drayton Valley, about 140 km west of the provincial capital, Edmonton, and Fox Lake, about 550 km north of the city, where 20 houses were consumed by the fire.
Firefighting helicopters and air tankers were brought in, and the federal government provided assistance from Ottawa.
The Edmonton Expo Center is hosting more than 1,000 evacuees, and in the town of High Level, a curling rink has been turned into a temporary shelter.
Alberta is a major oil-producing region, but so far oil facilities do not appear to be in immediate danger.
