Toyota announced on Friday that data from about 2.15 million users was made publicly available in Japan from November 2013 to mid-April this year.

The incident comes as the world’s largest automaker is working on new vehicle connectivity systems. The upgrade is seen as crucial to the delivery of services such as autonomous driving and other artificial intelligence-based systems.

The data leak, attributed to a cloud setup error, would include details such as the location and vehicle identification numbers. However, there have been no complaints of “malicious” use of the information, the company said, apologizing to customers.

The incident was caused by human error, said a Toyota spokesman, who announced that new online system monitoring systems would be introduced. Also, an investigation is being carried out within the company, and the employees are being trained.

Japan’s Personal Information Protection Commission has been informed of the incident.
