The Lupanar is the ancient brothel – and the most famous is the Lupanar in Pompeii, interesting even today for its erotic paintings on the walls. It was located very close to the city forum. Only in the last century did excavations and thorough research begin – after the entire 19th century historians refused to dwell on the subject or discuss it, for moral reasons. It was discovered that it was a fascinating world, typical of the society of the time. In Pompeii during the city’s heyday, there were 35 carpentry houses (enormous for a population of about 7,000 people, which suggests the prosperity of the profession), including a main one, built on two floors, with individual rooms (without doors, only with curtains) for each prostitute, stone beds covered with a mattress. And the walls full of graffiti. We learn a lot of other information from the novel we are reporting today, signed by Elodie Harper, a multi-award winning British journalist and writer.
The editors write: “Amara was once a much-loved daughter, until her father’s death plunged the entire family into poverty. Now she is a slave at Sălaşul Lupului, the infamous wolf lodge in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, run by a man she despises. Insightful, clever and inventive, Amara is forced to hide her talents. Because now her only value is the desire she can arouse in men.
But Amara’s soul is far from broken. Day after day, she walks the streets of Pompeii alongside the other women from Sălaşul Lupului, finding solace in the laughter and dreams they share.
Because the streets of Pompeii are full of opportunities. There, fate can smile on even the humblest slave. Amara learned that everything in this town has a price. But how much will her own freedom cost her?
Set in the year 74, in Pompeii, Lupanarul is the first volume of a trilogy that depicts the lives of women whose voices have been silenced for a long time.”
A book in which, in addition to many fictional characters, there is also the amazing figure of Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, i.e. Plinius the Elder, great Roman scholar, one of the first naturalists of the world – his best-known work, moreover the only one preserved, is the 37-volume “Natural History” encyclopedia.
“A powerful literary achievement that speaks of a woman’s unquenchable thirst for freedom.” – Love Reading
