An American court found that the FBI used the national database to extract information about citizens suspected of crimes. Between 2016 and 2020, the FBI accessed the database 278,000 times.
The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act allows the federal agency to track foreign citizens or Americans abroad, but domestic surveillance of its own citizens is strictly prohibited.
The FBI tightened its procedures in mid-2021 and 2022.
“Accordingly, these compliance incidents do not reflect subsequent FBI interrogation practices,” the FBI spokesman said.
