Authorities in Greece announce that they have recovered hundreds of stolen objects, including a 2nd century bronze statue of Alexander the Great. The treasure was recovered following a legal battle with the company of a British antiquities dealer, Greek officials said, according to the BBC.
For years, authorities in Greece have been fighting to recover stolen objects from museums and private collections around the world.
The announcement that 351 objects from the British Robin Symes collection will be repatriated after a 17-year legal battle was made by the Greek Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni.
Minister Mendoni did not say whether the items were related to the discovery by Italian and Swiss police in 2016 of a shipment of archaeological pieces said to have been stored by Symes in Geneva, Switzerland.
Among the most important works of art that Greece is trying to recover are the Parthenon sculptures.
They were removed from the Parthenon temple in Athens at the beginning of the 19th century by Lord Elgin, a British soldier and diplomat. The sculptures were then bought by the British government in 1816 and exhibited at the British Museum.
In March, the Vatican returned three fragments of the Parthenon temple that it had kept for centuries.
