Pope Francis has asked an Italian cardinal to lead a peace mission to end the war in Ukraine.
Pope Francis has asked Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the head of the Italian episcopal conference, to carry out a peace mission to help end the war in Ukraine, the Vatican announced, according to Sky News.
The sovereign pontiff first spoke of his intention to launch a mission in April, when he was returning from a trip to Hungary. The Pope did not provide details about his initiative.
“There’s a mission going on right now, but it’s not public yet. When it’s public, I’ll reveal it,” he told reporters on his flight home.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with the Pope last week at the Vatican. Also, the two have had several phone conversations since the war in Ukraine began.
