While opinion polls have placed the conservative New Democracy party in the lead, the change in the country’s electoral system makes it unlikely that it will achieve an absolute majority.
“The party ranking needs more than 45% of the electorate to create a single party administration, which seems quite unlikely,” says political analyst Panos Koliastasis.
New Democracy, led by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, appears in polls with a share between 31-38%, followed by the left-wing opposition Syriza, 4-7 points behind.
Polling stations will open at 07:00 local time throughout Greece and close 12 hours later. Just under 10 million Greeks are expected to vote.
If no party wins outright, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou will give the top three parties a three-day mandate, one at a time, to form a government.
If all fail, Sakellaropoulou will appoint a provisional government to run the country for a month, until the next election.
