The US Department of Defense announced that Thursday’s meeting, which will take place online, will focus on “supporting Ukraine’s armored capabilities” and “strengthening air defenses”.
The meeting will be attended by Defense Ministers and Chiefs of Staff from approximately 50 nations that provide military support to Ukraine to repel the Russian military invasion. The meeting comes in the context of debates on the supply of F-16 fighter jets.
The US President, Joseph Biden, announced that he supports the training of Ukrainian pilots on American-made F-16 fighter jets, but the training program will take place in European countries and will last several months. In addition, Washington is not opposed to the supply of F-16 aircraft to Ukraine by European countries.
Josep Borrell Fontelles, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that some European states have already initiated the training of Ukrainian military pilots. “I’m glad that, finally, the training of F-16 pilots has started in several European countries,” Borrell said on Tuesday, giving Poland as an example. Norway announced on Wednesday, according to the website Tagesschau.de, that it will contribute to the training program for Ukrainian pilots.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned that there will be “enormous risks” if Western states supply Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets.
