In the early 1980s, Audi changed the world of rallying when it introduced all-wheel drive cars to the World Championship. They registered their first triumphs in the 1981 season, and in the next season Audi won the Constructors’ Cup. It was clear that the future belonged to four-wheelers.
However, the Italian Lancia prepared a new special for the 1983 season with the designation 037, a light car with a mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. And with it, she engaged in a sharp fight with the Audi Quattro.
Almost unbelievable stories still circulate around the rivalry between these brands, such as the one about how the people from Lancia cleared the track of snow before the Monte Carlo Rally, where the Audi with all-wheel drive would have an advantage. Lancia’s season was also not made easier by the decision of Walter Röhrl, one of the team’s drivers and driving star (world champion in the 1980 and 1982 seasons), not to participate in some races.
Nevertheless, the Italian team eventually dominated the championship, even securing the Constructors’ Cup two more races before the end of the championship. It was the last time a single-axle drive car dominated the world championship.
And it was the rivalry between Lancia and Audi in the 1983 season that became the main theme of the new film. It’s called “Race for Glory: Audi vs. Lancia”, will premiere on January 5 next year and will feature actors such as Riccardo Scamarcio, Volker Bruch, Katie Clarkson-Hill, Esther Garrel, Giorgio Montanini, Gianmaria Martini, Haley Bennett and Daniel Brühl. Italian Stefano Mordini directed.
The newly released official trailer hints at what the film, which the makers describe as an action-packed sports drama inspired by real events, could offer. And it looks quite promising, mainly thanks to the nice shots of the Lancia 037 and the Audi Quattro.
Anyway, we’re looking forward to it, what about you?
