The peculiar family of electric cars (that is, those that are developed from the beginning on an “electric” platform) is designated by Kia with the letters EV. It was founded by the EV6 model – an almost 4.7-meter-long crossover with the top 585-horsepower GT version. From the beginning, the brand announced that the palette would grow. Downward, to more affordable electric cars? Yes, but later. First, Kia wanted to showcase its cutting-edge technology on a brand new flagship – the huge five-meter EV9 SUV. Here is!
Nine is a giant not only on paper, but especially when meeting in person for the first time. The large dimensions are further enhanced by the honestly box-like body and countless angular design elements. But the creators’ creativity doesn’t end there either. Note, for example, the sprawling headlights at the front from the fenders to the bottom of the bumper. Aerodynamic resistance is (despite the nose almost perpendicular to the road) at the level of a station wagon of the lower middle class. For example, active flaps with an air curtain or a covered lower part of the car help.
The customer has a choice of Earth and GT-Line versions. They differ in drive (we’ll get to that), but also in equipment. The base wears nineteen-inch wheels, has silver roof rails and simpler headlight graphics. The GT-Line is revealed by the black details of the body (slides, but also the rear-view mirrors) as well as the twenty-one-inch wheels. Whichever footwear you choose, always expect a futuristic, aerodynamic design.
The advantage of such a giant with a wheelbase of 3.1 meters? Royal interior space. It is not surprising that the Kia EV9 is a seven-seater as standard, paradoxically, you pay extra for a six-seater variant that spoils the crew even more. There is an option with swivel seats in the second row for CZK 12,000, which can create a mobile conference space. If you throw in another six thousand, you get two relaxing seats in the second row for traveling like cotton. They are sliding and you have plenty of space around you.
The weak point of cars with six or more seats is access and space in the third row. But the EV9 is really huge, so it’s not only easy to get in at the very back, but a person with a height of 178 cm still has enough room in front of the knees and above the head. The luggage space is 308 liters as standard, but by folding down all the seats you get a generous 2318 liters (2393 for the six-seater version) and, above all, a perfectly flat loading surface. Here two adults sleep one joy.
Buttons or displays? Both
While the nine has the shape of a typical SUV from the outside, when you first sit inside it is more reminiscent of large-capacity cars. Huge glass areas, large and very comfortable armchairs, countless storage spaces… you will settle in here very quickly. Inside, Kia does not skimp on recycled materials, such as vegan leather. However, it does not have a negative effect on the overall quality of the cabin. Sure, you’ll come across hard plastic here and there, but the frequented areas are softened and very pleasant to the touch.
Following their creator, they approached the traditional dilemma of whether to keep physical buttons or control everything via touchscreens. They chose a compromise combining both worlds. The displays play a role (which is not surprising for a futuristic machine), but you can set the temperature or the driving mode by physical pressure.
A sprinter and a marathon runner
As we already said, the EV9 comes to the Czech market in two variants. One is primarily focused on driving range, while the other will delight with its dynamic parameters. The basis is one electric motor at the back with an output of 204 horsepower and 350 newton meters. The tested four-wheeler with two electric motors is capable of 383 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque. And the difference in acceleration from rest to 100 is considerable – 9.4 vs. 5.3 seconds.
Both versions have the same battery with a usable capacity of 99.8 kWh. This is indeed a large battery that guarantees a decent range even for such a large car. The rear-wheel drive promises up to 563 kilometers, the four-wheel drive still a nice 505 km. The reality of everyday life is a bit more modest, but even in winter at temperatures around zero, we managed to drive with a consumption of around 25 kWh/100 km, i.e. so that we could cover around 400 kilometers per charge.
Modern architecture with 800V on-board network and the possibility of preheating the battery will come in handy on long journeys. Just press the corresponding item on the display and the flashlight will be prepared so that you can “push” energy at full power at the fast charging stand. In the case of the EV9, this is set at 240 kW, and in just fifteen minutes you have a charge for another 226 kilometers of driving. However, 50kW racks are still the most common in our country, on which it takes less than an hour and a half to go from 10 to 80%.
It’s great how nimbly a car with a curb weight of around 2.5 tons can accelerate. And it doesn’t matter at all whether from the place, outside the municipality, or if you need to join a fast highway lane. Electric motors with an immediate step-up of parameters do not hesitate and nimbly shoot this barn on wheels forward. The dynamics in a straight line are seriously excellent.
Quiet and comfortable
But roads are not just straight and physics cannot be completely fooled. If you are sharper even when entering tight corners, the nine will quickly respond with understeer and clumsiness caused by the high weight. The car is much more characterized by a leisurely pace, in which it is comfortable even at twenty-one (if the extra kilos are at least in the right place) and exemplary quiet – from the chassis, but also in terms of aerodynamic whistling.
Not a blow left
The Kia EV9 offers an entire army of top technologies. It is even ready for features that are yet to come into effect. Its architecture can, for example, take energy from a traction battery and send it back to the grid during connection to a “smart” house.
However, Czech motorists will probably be interested in another function. The electric car is factory-prepared for the installation of a breathalyzer. And if the driver accidentally inhales, the car will not start at all and the sinner will not drive off under steam. It is only a matter of time before this safety element is included in the list of mandatory ones in Europe.
The palette of safety and assistance systems would perhaps be published in a separate article. The Kia EV9, for example, guides you along the highway with maximum self-confidence, and all you have to do is flick the turn signal lever to indicate that you want to automatically change to another lane. But some helpers can be really annoying. For example, Kia permanently monitors your eyes and starts “sanding” you if you look in the rear-view mirrors for just a moment longer. Fortunately, all these assists can be disabled. Only then, before departure, it looks as if you are not preparing to drive a car, but to pilot a military aircraft.
The Kia EV9 is certainly not just another SUV of the dozen, but a technological leader among today’s electric cars. Sophisticated architecture, fast charging, decent range (even in winter!), huge interior space and a plethora of smart technologies inside… Although we admit that we could easily do without some. As a whole, however, we enjoy the car and over time we have come to like the extravagant appearance.
Kia’s new flagship is not only the biggest, but also the most expensive. The base with rear-wheel drive costs 1,949,980 CZK, prepare at least 2.1 million for a four-wheeler. However justified the amount may be considering the load of equipment and the size of the car, existing customers will have a hard time getting used to such amounts.
