Porsche Cayenne, Ferrari Purosangue, Lamborghini Urus… when a manufacturer of primarily (super) sports cars ventures into the SUV category, it earns a shower of criticism from die-hard fans. But it is sports utility vehicles that rapidly increase sales and satisfaction of the finance department for many car companies. And thanks to them, even the so popular flat specialties can be created.

At the same time, no one says that the parameters of such an SUV cannot be brutal. Today’s tested Lamborghini Urus Performante is sitting at the absolute top and with its dynamic capabilities it will dust many sports competitors. But we’ll get to that…

A predatory face, carbon accessories and a typical Lambo light signature. This piece of technology commands a lot of respect in the rearview mirror.

An impressive kit

Baby Mansory, Lego for real guys… the piece that we had the opportunity to test for a few days has earned several nicknames. And at least these two are actually accurate. The Lambo Urus really does look like a scaled-up kit – blocky, chunky and downright angry. Thanks to this, it attracts attention even in the rather mundane white Bianco Monocerus paintwork. During the configuration, someone also threw in red brake calipers and 23″ wheels, which, however, make a slightly smaller impression in the black paint.

The works of the Mansory company are mainly reminded of the carbon elements across the bodywork. The entire bonnet, roof, rear spoiler, sills and exhaust system ends are made of carbon fibre. Thanks to this, the Lambo boasts of a weight saving that has been reduced by less than fifty kilograms. This may sound laughable, given that the largest Lambo weighs 2150 kg, but it was enough to claim the title of fastest production SUV on Pikes Peak. The Urus Performante conquered the famous route in 10:32.064 s. Applause!

Lamborghini refers to its car as a superSUV. We lean towards a more traditional SUV-coupe, the roof slopes down really significantly at the back.

The captain is speaking to you

After sitting down for the first time, you feel that you are not even sitting in a car, but in a cockpit. Just look at the center console full of all sorts of buttons, levers and switches. The Urus Performante wants to be spectacular and it does it brilliantly. But no, it really is a car, I realize as I grip the Alcantara-covered steering wheel. This was certainly not spared in the cabin, it can also be found on the entire instrument panel or in the door trim.

Here, too, the elements are made of carbon, the icing on the cake is represented by red details such as belts and door handles. The interior has a touch of sporty luxury, which I think is detracted from by a single detail. When I go to select a sharp sports mode in a testosterone rush, I would probably want to touch something other than the rather cheap plastic lever on the center console.

Not familiar with the screen layout? The multimedia of the Urus is based on Audi (the Urus is a sibling of another wild SUV RS Q8), but it has its own graphics.

On the contrary, the seats are excellent. Stiff, made of pleasant material and with decent lateral guidance. Still comfortable even on long journeys. And because the seat is also honestly shaped in the back, all passengers will feel like they’re in cotton wool. Especially when the driver presses the gas pedal to the floor…

Given the shape of the body, the decent spaciousness inside is not too much of a surprise. Even in the back, a person with a height of 185 cm can sit with plenty of room in front of the knees and above the head, without being restricted in any way by the coupe-style sloped roof. And one more nice little thing. I’ve tested countless SUVs and station wagons lately, but I can’t remember the last time I had a child seat installed in the back so easily. The Urus has a decent entry space at the back and, above all, excellently accessible Isofixes. Plus points for Lambo, the whole range of family cars could do with learning.

Yes, you are really looking at the back seat. The shaping of the seats is unprecedented and there is plenty of space.

Loud and furious

The diet cure is not the only privilege of the Performante version, the four-liter eight-cylinder engine under the hood has also been strengthened. It has a devilish 666 horsepower and 850 newton meters of torque. It conquers 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 306 km/h. Does that sound brutal? It’s exactly the same live! You press the gas pedal all the way to the floor to overcome the roughly half-second delay, and then, pinned to the seat, you hurtle forward. As the world blurs around you, the exhaust system spits angrily into the surroundings. The wow effect is huge, the sound is excellent and happy hormones are spraying in all directions.

One would almost forget that he is sitting in a car of the SUV category, which, after all, is helped by a number of crutches. As standard, the Urus has an adaptive air suspension, active stabilizers or all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, which transfers up to 87 percent of the power to the rear wheels. Proper stopping is provided by the system of the largest carbon-ceramic brakes in the series.

The Performante is even stricter – the chassis has been reduced by twenty millimeters, the wheel track is wider by sixteen millimeters. And for example, the additional rear spoiler increases the downforce of the rear by thirty-eight percent.

The front discs have a diameter of 440 millimeters and 10 pistons push the brake pad onto them! At the back we find a 370mm disc with one big piston. The brake pedal is more sensitive and the system can hardly be tightened on Czech roads.

The Urus Performante drives extremely well, not only by the standards of its category. The body doesn’t lean in any way and the wide tires (developed by Pirelli especially for this model) perceive steering wheel instructions clearly. However… countless technological solutions can move physics, but not completely fool it. If you set a headlong pace, expect that the almost 2.2-ton engine room does not change direction so willingly and can resist understeer.

However, the tuning of the chassis itself deserves to be highlighted. It is stiff in all driving modes, but in sharp modes you are aware of the slightest bumps, while the comfort setting actually makes the car quite a comfortable SUV for long distances or urban travel. In this case, it is possible to drive slightly above the tabulated 14.1 l/100 km. Rather, count on taking two to five liters more. Yes, it’s easy for an eight-cylinder to squeeze an 85-liter tank in a sitting position.

You would look for a Czech price list on the Lamborghini website in vain, the amounts for our people are converted from euros. The Urus Performante starts at 5,370,000 CZK, but that’s just the beginning. When you get crazy with extra items, even six million might not be enough. It is a lot? Yes. Does it have to bother you? Not exactly. The quota of the most polished Urus for the Czech market is basically sold out.
